METEOR MENACE

On February 15th, 2013, out of the blue, a meteorite exploded in the earth’s atmosphere above the Russian region of Chelyabinsk. The event is a reminder of the ever-present 'Meteor Menace' and the need to understand more about these missiles from outer space.

We put the threat from outer space into perspective and visit the best-preserved meteorite impact in the world – Arizona’s Meteor Crater. It was caused around 50,000 years ago by an iron slug only 50 meters in diameter. And then there’s the 'dino killer', the meteorite that hit Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula seen by many experts as the death knell for most cretaceous creatures. Our mammal ancestors crawled out of that one, but will we be so lucky next time?
