A Priest's Diary – The Executed of Occupied Paris
-
80th Anniversary of the End of World War II01.01.2025 to 31.12.2025
By August 1944, when Paris was liberated by the allies, Franz Stock had recorded a total of 863 shootings he witnessed in his diary.
Franz Stock gave the executed people spiritual support and a last escort. The German occupiers had appointed him as chaplain to those whom they had imprisoned in the Paris and condemned to death: resistance fighters, hostages, spies. He gives back what was taken from them in the first place: their dignity. The documentary seamlessly incorporates Franz Stock and his diary entries into the daily lives in occupied Paris from 1940 to 1944. The use of impactful newsreel clips, colorful home movies by Germans, French and Americans, as well as impressive silent film fragments from German and US sources that the makers discovered during their extensive research adds depth to the narrative.
