African Gas: Europe's New Energy Source

52' (ENG, GER), 30' (GER)

As Europe searches for new gas suppliers in the wake of Russia's war against Ukraine, Africa emerges as a potential solution.

Africa, regarded worldwide as a "sleeping gas giant," is a continent rich in untapped reserves. Between 2010 and 2020, 40 percent of the world's gas reserves were discovered in Africa. Mozambique is expected to become the third-largest African exporter of liquefied natural gas, and Senegal in West Africa is also seen as a major future gas supplier. But what does this mean for their citizens? Will they truly benefit from the gas exports, with new jobs and reduced migration to Europe? To date, the gas sector in Mozambique has led to conflict rather than prosperity. Is a turnaround in sight? And is African gas coming too late to be relevant for European climate neutrality targets?
